Research that shows DHA is effective for Bipolar Illness

1. Some of the important research on the brain chemistry of bipolar disorder was done after the death of subjects with affective disorder. They were found to have significant deficits of DHA in the prefrontal cortex of the brain.

“Recent postmortem studies have found significant DHA deficits in the PFC (pre-frontal cortex) gray matter of patients with affective disorders. Because preclinical studies have found that brain DHA and/or its bioactive metabolites are neuroprotective, DHA deficits in PFC gray matter may increase vulnerability to the neuropathology also observed in the PFC of patients with affective disorders.”

2. When living patients with bipolar disorder had the amount of DHA in their blood cells tested, those with bipolar illness had significantly lower levels of DHA than control subjects without the illness.

“Blood plasma levels were measured in patients diagnosed with Bipolar Illness and their levels of DHA were significantly lower than the plasma of controls without the illness. Therefore DHA may provide a pharmacological basis for treatment of bipolar illness.”

3. Bipolar patients with their first onset of manic symptoms had their DHA levels tested. Their blood cells were found to be deficient in DHA compared to healthy controls. In addition, there was no difference in EPA levels between the bipolar patients and the control subjects, leading us more to the conclusion that DHA deficiency is the prime nutritional deficiency in bipolar illness.

4. Further analysis of the DHA levels showed a greater deficiency of DHA in bipolar illness but not in patients with major depression who did not have bipolar illness.

“Male and female patients with Major Depressive Disorder and Bipolar Disorder exhibit selective erythrocyte DHA deficits relative to healthy controls, and this deficit was numerically greater in Bipolar Disorder patients.”

5. An actual analysis of the diets of bipolar patients showed they consumed a diet with a lower dietary intake of DHA and other nutrients than healthy subjects.

“Bipolar individuals had significantly lower dietary intake of DHA and other key nutrients, and increased intake of saturated fats. The findings suggest that giving DHA and other nutrients may correct metabolic imbalances and may positively affect their health outcomes.”

6. Further, in Japan, where the dietary intake of DHA is significantly higher than in the USA, levels of bipolar illness in the general population are remarkably lower.

“In Japan where DHA intake is high, the incidence of Major Depression and Bipolar Illness are many times lower than in the USA. In order to bring levels of Americans up to the level of most Japanese children would have to have a daily dose of 400-700 mg per day of pure DHA, and adults would need a dose of 700-1000 mg per day.”

7. The most astounding study, though, was with pregnant women who could no longer take medication for their bipolar illness because of the risk of birth defects. Instead, they were given DHA alone, which seemed to control their symptoms.

“In our pilot study of 10 Caucasian women taking DHA while attempting to conceive (BP1 = 9, BPII = 1), age 27-42 years, DHA was well tolerated and suggests that a larger study would be feasible. The elucidation of the potential role of omega-3 fatty acids as a treatment for BD (Bipolar Disorder) requires further study. The current data are not sufficient to support a recommendation of monotherapy treatment as a substitute for standard pharmacologic treatments. However, judicious monotherapy in selected clinical situations, or adjunctive use, may be warranted pending further data from adequately powered controlled clinical trials. Our pilot trial of DHA in women who plan to stop conventional psychotropics in order to conceive suggests that such trials are feasible.”

How to Get an Omega 3 Blood Test from your Doctor or on your own

1. A prescription for a blood test to check your omega-3 levels. This will let you and your doctor know if you are deficient in omega-3 DHA and EPA. A psychiatric clinic at the University of Cincinnati has been testing all inpatient arrivals and has found 75% of them highly deficient in omega-3 molecules, DHA and EPA.

2. Here are the procedure codes your doctor will need for your prescription if he doesn’t have a list:

3. After your doctor gives you a written prescription, call the laboratory you wish to use to make sure they offer the test. Check whether your insurance will cover the cost.

I would venture to say there is only a 50/50 chance that your insurance will cover this. There might also be only a 50/50 chance your doctor will order the test. If this is the case, fear not! It is time to buck the system and take your life and well-being into your own power. Consider putting out a small amount of money to order the test yourself. You don’t need a prescription. There are at least half a dozen companies that will send you a test kit with which you prick your finger. You then mail them back this blood drop for analysis; they will send you a full report of your omega-3 blood levels.”

AIM:

The aim of this paper was to evaluate the impact of augmenting administered antidepressant treatment of patients suffering from a severe episode of treatment-resistant recurrent depression or bipolar affective disorder with omega-3 fatty acids and comparing the obtained results with those achieved in the groups of patients potentiated with lithium or lamotrigine.

METHODS:

The research subjects were 21 patients diagnosed with a severe episode of treatment-resistant recurring depression in the course of recurrent depression disorders- or bipolar affective disorders. Patient eligibility included failure to respond to at least two 4-week antidepressant treatments (venlafaxine at a dose of up to 300 mg/day or paroxetine at up to 60 mg/day). The regular antidepressant treatment regimen was augmented by the “eye-q” preparation with a course of 24 capsules per day (2.2 g of EPA, 700 mg of DHA, 240 mg of GLA, from Evening Primrose Oil,40 mg of vitamin E,). The patients received the preparation for at least 4 weeks. The comparison groups consisted of the patients suffering from the current episode of severe treatment-resistant depression, treated by potentiating antidepressant treatment with lithium and lamotrigine.

CONCLUSIONS:

Augmenting a standardized antidepressant treatment with omega-3 fatty acids (and n-6 GLA Evening Primrose Oil) resulted in a marked improvement in depression symptoms measured on the Hamilton scale in the majority of patients with treatment-resistant depression. Clinical improvement upon administering fatty acids was proportional to the one achieved by potentiating therapeutic effects with lithium and lamotrigine. The use of high doses of fatty acids did not cause significant side effects.
